Although released just last year, K.Flay’s hop-rocker EP is still the talk for some people. Well, at least for me.

Evolution of Crush Me

K.Flay’s latest EP was released on August 19, 2016. Before releasing the EP, she announced that she signed to Night Street Records, a subdivision of Interscope Records. Crush Me reveals a new, darker sound to K.Flay’s discography. She seems to experiment with a more rock vibe in the EP, which she has never really experimented with, although her usual hip hop roots still make up half of the EP. The finished product of the album is incredibly great. From the grunge-rock vibes to the hip hop produced beats, it’s easy to say that it’s a nice combination.

Song Walkthrough

“Blood In The Cut” is the opening song of the EP and immediately is the rock-bop of all the tracks. As the song builds up to the chorus, there’s a smooth, grungy guitar that plays. When the chorus hits, that’s when the drums come into the picture and give the track a more upbeat sound.

“Hollywood Forever” starts and is similar to the first track but soon you can tell the difference. This track is less loud but still has that grunge vibe. This is the experimental track on the EP. The chorus brings out the slow drums while the background production makes it sound a bit psychedelic.

“Dreamers” begins and starts with a eerie-sounding synth but soon transforms to a hip hop beat that fits the song perfectly. This is K.Flay returning to some of her roots although there is an alternative vibe playing through out the song. Some of the production playing in the track make the song seem dreamy, yet danceable at the same time.

“You Felt Right” is the closing track on the EP. As soon as the song starts, you can hear the hip hop production, as usual. The chorus is louder than any part of the song, using the most up beat sounds to produce the highlights of the track.

Lyrical Analysis

K.Flay’s lyrics are always deep and meaningful. She may have some songs here and there that may contain not so deep lyrics but the majority of her songs always have meaningful lyrics. For the EP Crush Me, I think she really tried to create something with her lyrics so that it could go with the production of the EP and the message that she tries to deliver to listeners. The lyrics on Crush Me go from the self destruction of oneself to giving hope to “dreamers” out there in the world. As you can tell, the lyrics have a purpose and are meaningful.
