Principal’s Letter for May 2021

Tina Salazar, Akins Early College High School Principal

Dear Eagle Family,

We are in historic times. We are graduating a class of students that mostly has not been physically on campus since March 12th, 2020. This has been difficult to say the least. However it was wonderful to see the majority of our seniors all dressed up at prom and we hope to see many more of them at the senior parade and of course, graduation on June 3rd.

With that said I am very concerned with the course failure rate right now for our underclassmen. It is alarming. Clearly, this pandemic has caused an abnormal situation, however, TEA still expects us to graduate all of our students on time, which means within four years of when they entered high school. (Texas Education Agency) gives all public schools four years to graduate a student. Once a student is enrolled in high school, the clock starts. Four years from that beginning date TEA expects that student to graduate no matter what. (Right now that still exists.). All schools who have students who do not finish on time affect that school’s report card. It is called our graduation rate. TEA has not changed this rule and therefore we are still required to help these students get back on track to graduate in 4 years.

We understand that there were many obstacles that caused this situation whether it was the pandemic, a faulty Chromebook, no charger, bad WIFI, whatever the case may be, we are offering solutions for all of our Akins students.

Starting June 7 we are offering in-person Summer School taught by Akins teachers to help students recover credits from the Spring of 2020, Fall of 2021, and the Spring of 2021. We are also offering Delta courses to help our students recover credits.

Session 1- Monday, June 7-17 (8 days, except Fridays)

Session 2- Monday, June 21-July 1 (8 days, except Fridays)

The first class runs from 9 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. The second class runs from 10:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.  Please know that it is not too late and we are here to help all of our students be successful. In high school students must pass all of their courses to move on to the next grade. Please reach out to us to see where you or your student is academically and together we will see what we need to do next. Our email addresses and phone numbers on our website: akinseagles.org

I know that this pandemic has been extremely difficult for us all to navigate and it is going to take every single one of us to help our students rebound from this in every aspect. We at Akins will become whatever our students need. We will serve and assist.

Seniors, we will miss you. This is not the year we wanted for you, but we are trying to help send you off with a bang!

CONGRATULATIONS AKINS ECHS CLASS OF 2021! Forever and ever #WingsUP! We are so proud of you!

Sincerely, Principal Tina Salazar
