Soccer teams get a boost from their success

The boys and girls soccer team has kicked off the year with a decent amount of success.

The boys’ varsity made it to the Hays Rebel Cup Soccer Tournament but lost the championship game 5-3 against the Corpus Christi Kings.

All varsity and JV players attended the tournament including senior captain Eduardo Guzman, senior Alberto Suarez, and junior Jordan Acosta.

“Varsity lost to Corpus Christi King in a game that could have gone either way,” soccer coach Bob Williams said.

The team is expected to do well this year having won against Travis 1-0, their main rivals.

Although varsity went into the championship tournament prepared to win, they came out in second.

“Even though we did not get first place, we are proud of ourselves and motivated to work harder so we can win first next time,” Guzman said.

As for the girls, they have had their share of greatness as well.

Girls’ soccer hosted the second Copa Akins where varsity made it all the way to the championship game but due to a shortage of players were not able to win.

Too many players were injured and could not play, leaving the team forced to play short handed in the finals.

Senior captain Renee Schneider and junior Briana Amaro were extremely proud of their team and what they accomplished.

“Girls soccer have never even made it to the championship game,” Schneider said.

“Just having the opportunity to play there was more than enough for the team.”

The girls plan on bettering themselves throughout the season and become a better team as a whole by training everyday and working jointly to become the team they need to be to achieve success.

“We need to practice our shooting and defense in order to make more goals,” Amaro said. “Once we master this skill we will be on a winning streak.”
