Dark colors, broken pieces, and manga based art depicted sophomore Ana Arevalo’s vision of the “Magic of a Moment.”
Arevalo was the only student whose art made it to state for a reflections piece on a prompt called “Magic of the Moment” which was provided by the Texas Parent Teacher Association.
“Reflections is a program that the Texas PTA sponsors every year,” art teacher Amanda Yopp said. “They’ve been encouraging us for the past couple of years to submit work.”
Arevalo’s black and white painting, which was broken up in to five pieces, depicted two lovers separating.
“It was that final moment where the clock switches over to the next, 11:59 to 12:00. What’s more magical than that last minute of the day?” Arevalo said. “It was reflecting how in life there are difficulties and while they may seem bad in the moment, you may look back at them and remember the memories you had with the person and it was awful but those memories are wonderful.”
According to Arevalo the piece was an effortless project that took a couple minutes to complete the draft. It was also her first time ever winning an award for her work.
“The fact that I made it to state was shocking enough but when I was told I was the only one who made it to state at Akin’s I was wowed. It wasn’t something I slaved over, the draft took five minutes,” Arevalo said.
Arevalo is also entering more work in to the annual UIL competition and hopes it earns her more notable awards.
“I expect her to go to nationals,” Yopp said. “It’s a good piece and she worked really hard on it. She thinks outside of the box.”
