In the early 2000s, Tsukimi Ayano, whose family left the area when she was a child, moved back to Nagoro to look after her father and made a doll of him and placed it in a field. She has made more than 400 dolls, including replacements, and about 350 are in the village.

Soon people started to make dolls of residents who used to live in the village who died or left, now dolls are spotted everywhere around the village. The village’s school classrooms are filled with dolls of students who used to attend., and are even wearing the same clothes they last wore.
