It’s a hard world out there and the students in life skills are getting a first hand experience at learing how to work in the real world.
This year life skills is getting a chance to go off campus to intern at places like Hobby Lobby, It’s About Thyme, HEB and Target.
Teachers Emily Llyod, Kelcey Williams, and Jessica Treybig accompany the students. They leave at 9:30 a.m. almost everyday and spend about an hour and a half working. During their visits, they help out around and work with any employees that need help.
The life skills teachers will alternate schedules of where they will be taking the students. It’s About Thyme lets the students help water the plants and pot soil for their gardens.
“I like It’s About Thyme better than HEB,” senior Victoria Grabbs said.
“At Hobby Lobby we helped unload the seasonal boxes for Christmas,” sophomore Bertha Castillo said.
The life skills teachers are the ones usually in charge of arranging what each student will be doing.
“Sometimes the employees instruct them and tell them how to do the work and other times it’s us teachers helping,” teacher’s assistant Jonathan Allen said.
The teachers walk around with the students but let them learn the skills.
“Going to these stores is mostly about etiquette,” Williams said.
When the students go to HEB they make a list of groceries and are left to fine what they need on their own.
“This is a great opportunity to have the students see what it is like working in the real world,” Treybig said.
William splits her class in half on what place they will visit.
“They have a better understanding of what they need to do while interning,” Williams said.
The students are learning and working to gain as much experience as possible to help in the future.
