Akins Business Practicum Intern students were invited to participate in a pilot program between AISD and the Texas WorkForce Commission. On Thursday January 10, 2013, students got to visit with the workforce commission and learn about high demand jobs in the Austin Area. In addition, the interns also learned how to prepare themselves with the soft skills or hard to measure skills that are required along with the foundational skills needed for these high demand jobs.
Students pre-tested, improved skills using the curriculum designed to meet them at their need determined by the pre-test, tested again, and earned certifications that are industry recognized.
“The students left the commission with a great appreciation for the opportunities they’d been offored,” ABL²E teacher Lisa Shaw said. “They were professional, personable, and highly engaged in the meeting.”
