On Thursday, April 11, 2013 the Akins Orchestra competed and earned nothing but 1’s in the String UIL Concert and Sight-Reading Competition. The competition consisted of three judges sitting, listening and rating as the Akins Orchestra students performed in the concert portion. The students earned a 1 (superior rating) in this category and then for the first time, performed a piece of music that the judges yet again gave the group a ranking of a 1.
“I am proud beyond words,” orchestra director Cathy Bennett said. “Not many performing groups have the honor of receiving a perfect score.”
With Akins competing against many schools across the district including Bowie, McCallum, Anderson, and LASA, the orchestra group felt they left the competition with success.
“We did really good this year.” sophomore Robert Ott said. “Since last year we improved a bunch and Ms. Bennett is really proud of all our hard work.”
