Sweat trickles down every players face and cascades to the court floor.
Perfection and success isn’t just a goal this year, its expected from every player on the lady Eagles basketball team.
“We have a very good out look this year,” basketball coach Helena Martin said. “We are light years ahead of the other teams.”
This year the lady Eagles are determined to get another banner to hang next to the other two that lie on the gym wall.
Try-outs were Oct. 18th through the 20th.
“Try-outs went as exepcted, we are sure to dominate,” Martin said.
The basketball team is working very hard in preparation for up coming games.
“There is zero tolerance once the girls are on the court,” Martin said.
Varsity’s first scrimmage was a 47-20 victory over Crockett. Their following scrimmage was at Hays against teams Cibolosteele and Hays.
The team had three 20-minute quarters against Cibolosteele and then another against Hays. They had a break in-between and then played a real eight-minute quarter scrimmage against each team.
The lady Eagles lost, but was ready to get stronger and work harder during practice he next day.
“We are really focusing on our weaknesses after each game and improving,” senior Kassie Smith said.
“The girls are really working on every weakness and busting their butts in practice,” Martin said
Last year the team had only one senior playing for varsity and now most of varsity is filled with seniors.
“Knowing that most of the varsity players are seniors is a great confidence boost,” Smith said. “We’re able to build a foundation for the younger girls and still have the experience to go out and beat good teams like Westlake and Anderson.”
The team is working hard to get stronger and faster. Every morning at 7:30 the girls are either in the weight room knocking out the first part of their work out or in the gym sprinting and working on mistakes and plays.
“We have already started out better then last year,” junior Ashley Lopez said. “The communication and chemistry is really good.”
To ensure a spot on the team each player must work hard during practice and during games.
“You really have to try to improve,” Lopez said. “You will suck on the court if you don’t work hard and try your best.”
