A new season is coming up for student wrestlers this month, with new and old students joining the team.
Being in a new district means the team is competing against different schools from last years.
“Bowie is always a challenge, and we are in a new district this year,” head coach Roy Tambunga said.
“Westlake and Pflugerville should be tough.” Tambunga said.
Some new schools Akins wrestling will be competing against are Westlake, Austin High and New Braunfels
The different schools will be a challenge this year and predicting how the tournaments might go is tough
The team is still going to be playing against Bowie, Travis, McCallum, Crocket, Anderson and Cedar Park.
“We have a lot of young new freshman wrestlers that are not experienced,” Tambunga said.
With new wrestlers, students that have been doing it for one or two years have to work hard by helping them perfect their moves.
“I try to help the new wrestlers by showing them step by step the technics and demonstrate how to do the moves perfectly,” second year wrestler, junior Eric Suarez said.
“I started wrestling last year because I wanted to do something that would kill time, and I ended up falling in love with it,” Suarez said.
Just wanting to be on a team is something that he has in common with one of his fellow wrestlers, Julie Leal.
“In my freshman year, I saw the team picture, and I wanted to join in because it was kind of a hidden gem and it wasn’t a glamorized as football and basketball were,” Leal said.
