High expectations, new goals, and hard work are being embedded in this year’s varsity Eagle’s baseball team. With a disappointing season last year, the Eagle’s plan on working towards a successful season this year
“Last year, we finished the season with only five wins,” senior R.C Medrano said. “We plan on changing our attitude and understanding our responsibilities on and off the field this season.”
As the spring approached, baseball tryouts were held and gathered many athletes with the same hope of making the team.
“We had a really good turn out this year,” senior right fielder Billy Ferren said. “I feel we have a really good shot at making playoffs.”
With a total of 18 players on varsity, five of whom are seniors, the young Eagle’s team realizes the season will be faced with some challenges.
“Our pitching depth this year will be one of our biggest challenges along with some of our player’s experience,” head coach Steven Valasquez said. “We are a very young team this season which means we just have to continue to work harder towards our goal.”
As the Eagle’s baseball team has constantly had a reputation of a losing team, the players have continued to represent the program by showing their work ethic.
“A lot of off-season effort has been put in,” Velasquez said. “The guys worked all summer and fall on their own time to get stronger and faster.”
With many new players joining the program, it gives others the opportunity to lead by example.
“Since the team is really young this year, it means that us seniors really have to step up and be the leaders of the team for the younger players,” Ferren said.
The determined mind set for change in this year’s baseball program is clear to all the players.
“I feel we just have to come together as a team and play as one whole team,” junior second-basemen Rene Castro said. “We will have a better chance of winning and making it to playoffs if we do.”
