Veda Larson: ‘Water’
Veda Larson’s piece that qualified her for the state competition was a big surprise and not just because it is rare for freshmen to make it to this top-level competition.
“I told my friends and they were really happy, but at first I was a little disappointed because another piece I tried on wasn’t the one that was going and the one I didn’t know what I was doing on was going,” she said. “But I was really happy because I was just like ‘WOW! This is cool!’”
Larson said she was just having fun with it.
“Like I just wanted to see what I could do with my skills,” she said.
Her choice of medium was watercolor, adding that it was her first piece using it, and says her inspiration was the koi pond in her backyard and a bit of the traditional Chinese art style.
“I’ve never really played around with watercolor before this art piece,” she said. “I was just seeing what I could do. There weren’t really any difficulties with it, I was just experimenting and going with the flow.”
