Godzilla vs Kong is fun monster brawl
April 23, 2021
It’s been almost 60 years since the last time fans have seen Godzilla and King Kong on the big screen together.
The anticipation to see these goliath monsters go head to head was already high in November 2020 when the movie was originally scheduled for release. The fall surge in the COVID-19 pandemic forced the movie to be rescheduled for a March 31 release simultaneously in movie theaters and on streaming service HBO Max.
With the release of the film bringing to an end the 60 year gap in a movie with a faceoff with these cinema icons and the fact it would be the first big action movie released since the beginning of the pandemic, it’s clear why anticipation was so high. It was clearly an important cinematic event for both super fans and casual moviegoers. But the big question is does the film deliver?
Well let’s start with the action. The action in this film is super fun. The epic fights between Kong and Godzilla are incredibly entertaining and they look stunning. The Hong Kong fight is lighted wonderfully and is not clouded by bad lighting or weather effects.
The human characters are for the most part pretty good, too. The three main characters we follow are decent enough but the one that stands above the rest is Jia, played by Kaylee Hottle, who many are saying steals the show from some of the bigger name cast members.
Hottle is a deaf actress played by Kaylee Hottle, who attends Texas School for the Deaf in Austin. Critics of the film have said that when the monsters aren’t fighting, there isn’t much of a compelling story going on. However, that changes with the Jia character who manages to communicate with Kong.
Now while the action does deliver and the main 3 human characters are decent, but the secondary cast falls short. Mark Russle (Kyle Chandler) and his daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) who are some of my personal favourites, were criminally underused. Now this was likely due to King Of The Monsters’ lackluster performance, but it’s still disappointing.
So overall Godzilla vs Kong is incredibly enjoyable and while it does have a few pacing issues and is lacking in building compelling human story lines. So if you’re looking for a good time with a fun monster brawl then you’ll be very satisfied, but if you’re looking for something with a strong narrative, you’ll likely be disappointed.
