Scholarships still available to seniors

Sarah Simmons works vigirously to prepare for senior breakfest in the College and Career Center last week.

The class of 2014 will be finished in a couple of days. It’s only a few short months before they start school all over again.
For most seniors, college is only right around the corner. College bound students should have signed up for housing, accepted their financial aid offers, and be connecting with their future roommates.
Seniors should have made their deposit to attend their college of choice and should be requesting their final transcripts. Everything is hopefully in order for seniors to take the next step for the rest of their life.
“You can be applying for scholarships at any time, scholarships are year round,” said college advisor Celina Artusi “Local scholarships are a lot less competitive, even $500 can cover your books for a semester.”
Hundreds of scholarships are available while you’re attending college, not all of your scholarship money needs to be earned your senior year.
It’s essential to maintain a good GPA during your freshman year of college to be eligible for various scholarships for your other years during college, but it’s not enough to just receive the scholarships, for most scholarships you must also maintain your GPA to keep your “free” money.
“Applying for a scholarship is like applying for a job. Students that receive the most money usually apply to the most scholarships,” Artusi said.
Be on the look out for unofficial “scholarship” scams received via e-mail or letter. Most claim to provide a scholarship service for fees or other additional charges. Scholarships should be obtained through a university or a trustworthy source.
Money is still available on Websites like College Board and zinch.com, which offer anywhere from $500 to $50,000. A lot of scholarships are still available so students should not give up, Artusi said.
