Custodian dies from Covid-19

Jose Velarde, an Akins custodian for five years, was diagnosed with COVID-19 over the holiday break, and passed away on Sunday Jan. 25.

In January, the Akins community lost beloved custodian Jose Velarde.

Velarde was diagnosed with COVID-19 over the holiday break, and passed away on Sunday Jan. 25. Principal Tina Salazar said that campus leaders remained in close contact with his family and “sent them continued prayers and heartfelt condolences during this difficult time.”

She said Velarde was an adored member of the Akins family for the last five years. He would always lend a helping hand, went above and beyond in his job, and had an unforgettable smile. His friendliness touched us all. He will be forever missed by his Akins Early College High School Family.

Velarde was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He left this world on Sunday, January 24th, 2021 to rest in peace. He was born in Guanajuato, Mexico and left his country to explore new horizons in the United States.

Velarde loved spending time with his family, friends, and coworkers. He also impacted many people with his conversations and smile. He will be missed by many people and may he rest in peace along with his wife, Emma Velarde-Sanchez.
