The Food of San Antonio

October 25, 2014

Walking around the San Antonio River Walk is an experience that no person in their right mind would pass up, and most people would agree with that. However, what people sometimes forget to mention is that half of the experience of walking around San Antonio is the food that makes the day so tasteful.

One of the most interesting points to be made about San Antonio food is diverse and mixed culture. Although a vast majority of the restaurants around the river walk happen to be Texmex style restaurants, there are some more exotic finds to be found among the see of Mexican restaurants and fast food chains.

One of these magnificent restaurants is Lüke. “Lüke was founded by John Besh, and is the only one of seven restaurants that was not based in New Orleans,” Supervisor Chad Harris said.

…Here we serve a mixture of French and Cajun seafood, with a bit of Texas Flare to it… And I’d like to think that all of our customers think the food is a ten out of ten.

— Supervisor Chad Harris

Local regulars like Alex come to Lüke fairly often, and according to him and his Houstonian friend Mike, the food is “somewhere between an eight-and-a-half and a nine out of ten.” But Lüke isn’t the only tasty restaurant around. For people that prefer american food, especially “American Eclectic,” as Head Server Chris Sanders said, Biga by the Banks is the place to go.

Biga is an American eclectic restaurant,” Sanders said.

…Most of our clientele comes from conventions, but we have a fairly large group of regulars that come in quite frequently… Most of which I know personally on a name-to-name basis.

— Head Server Chris Sanders

Like Lüke, Biga is a restaurant in which people often come and go with a happy belly and smile on their face, and Sanders is confident that customers will leave saying it was “ten out of ten.”

“I love the food here. I’ve been working here for 15 years, and as of now, I can sell the food pretty well if someone asks me ‘what I would suggest,'” Sanders said.

San Antonio oysters plenty of authentic and original restaurants, all of which are their own special diamonds in the rough. The next time anybody walks the river walk, may they remember restaurants like Lüke and Biga, and the countless others such as food carts,  The Esquire Tavern, Bella on the River, or the Orignial Blanco Cafe.
