Student Council Sponsors: Yvonne Rodriguez and Rodolfo Preciado

Professional Communications and Debate teacher, Yvette Rodriguez and English 2 teacher, Rodolfo Preciado, have recently taken over as the new Student Council sponsors in January.

Rodriguez said that their main roles as sponsors is to make sure that the club is student-led.

“We’re kind of just facilitating and mentoring them, but we really want the students to take control and use their ideas and goals of what they want for the school,” she said.

Preciado said that he thinks Student Council represents a group of students who are committed to making their community a better place for the student body in general.

Rodriguez and Preciado said that they’ve faced challenges trying to rebuild and recruit.

“Getting it off the ground with COVID hit us pretty hard. Getting it restarted again and getting kids involved has been our biggest challenge,” Rodriguez said.

“We’re electing a whole new panel of officers, so getting that organized is a little challenging. We are going to keep our president Maria Contreras,” Preciado said. “But yeah, it’s been great though. We love everyone’s enthusiasm. There were a lot of students that showed up at our meeting last Thursday.”

Preciado said that he hopes to “create more events that will get just students more in love with the campus and make more people have more pride for their school.”

“I hope that the organization can help everyone realize that school could be a really fun place for learning,” he said.

Rodriguez said that she wants to “get the spirit back up.”

“Just getting that commodity with the kids together, because they need that. They want that rather than just looking at their devices. They want to be unified and a little bit more engaged with each other. And I think the Student Council will help them with that,” she said.
