Akins experiences lockdown after false alarm

Staff, Staff

Akins High School administrators put the campus on lockdown for about 30 minutes Friday morning while they searched for a suspicious adult supposedly carrying a rifle.

After administrators ended the lockdown they announced the rifle turned out to be a black umbrella with an umbrella sling carried by an Akins staff member. A student told a teacher that a person on campus was in possession of a weapon and administrators immediately put the campus on lockdown as a precautionary measure, according to a letter sent home to parents Friday afternoon.

Austin school district police and City of Austin Police responded to the lockdown, diverting traffic on South First Street away from the school during the incident.
