Letter to the Editor: JROTC instructor shares opinion on pledge

Colonel Oliverio

I often use the WWII Iwo Jima picture in my class presentations. I ask the students to reflect on the photograph as I want them to tell me how it makes them feel. I get very diverse and mostly positive responses.

I then ask them to imagine if all six members of the flag raisers were to visit our classroom what they’d think the flag raisers would say about the current generation. I think the answer lies in the photo of Akins JROTC and Criminal Justice (on their day off) honoring our flag and our Veterans.

As I marched down Congress with my cadets for the annual Veterans Day parade, I was reminded of how great this country is. Flags were flying, young and old were waving and cheering and standing when “Old Glory” passed by.

The people who really understand the great sacrifices made to insure our flag still proudly flies above us will surely stand if it passes by.

I am also reminded of a famous quote “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” All of us in uniform will “stand up”, fight and die if necessary for our great land and its symbol if called upon.
