Akins teacher receives statewide recognition

Humanities Texas recently awarded history teacher Anne Sherwood for outstanding teaching award and excellence and innovation in the teaching of the humanities.
Sherwood received a $5,000 cash reward and an additional $500 for Akins to purchase materials.
“First, I have to thank my beloved uncle Pete. who has mentored me in the humanities all my life, He introduced me to everyone who empowered the family from Louis Armstrong to Shakespeare even W.B Yeats.” said Sherwood.
“Not only wouldn’t I be teaching, but I wouldn’t be standing here without his brilliant inspiration,” Sherwood said.
“Yes, math and science teach us how to calculate what we are but the humanities teaches us how to understand who we are, thank you for defending that truth.”
After expressing her gratitude to Humanities Texas and Congressman Lamar Smith for attending. She thanks Principle Daniel Girard, her fellow teachers and her students.
“Principle Girard, I am grateful for you for trusting in me with this hybrid humanities classroom, it was an awfully good idea and you handed it to me and it flew. Thank you for providing and protecting a learning environment that has allowed us to thrive.” Sherwood said.
