Senior Christian Martinez performs alongside his castmates at dress rehearsal for the production of “Youre A Good Man Charlie Brown”. Martinez plays Charlie Brown, the lead role in the play.

When it rains it pours, or – more accurately – freezes.

At least that has been true for the Akins Journey Theater Company recently.

The postponed production of You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown has been a rollercoaster ride for first year theater teacher Erica Vallejo.

It could be looked at as a beautiful nightmare. Vallejo hopes to get pinched and wake up from this dream. This is Vallejo’s first solo production and it is everything someone hopes will never happen for his or her first time.

The play suffered through a series of snafus right before it was about to hit the stage, ranging from delayed dress rehearsals, to sick performers to quitting cast members.

The biggest challenge the play suffered from was the two school day cancellations due to freezing rain that coincided with the opening of the play, causing Vallejo to ultimately postpone the staging of the production until May.

Vallejo is concerned about losing money for the department because of the loss of ticket sale revenue. However, they plan to resume the play in May after the University Scholastic League competition season ends.

The theater department also benefited financially from the fact that the set used in the play was donated by the San Antonio Alamo Heights High School choir department. This saved the department thousands of dollars in construction cost.

“Even though there has been set backs, it give’s us more time to perfect the show,” Vallejo said. “It’s going to be an amazing show. The show will go on, just wait on it.”
