The end to a subpar football season

As Akins football comes to a close, seniors say goodbyes, underclassmen get prepared for varsity starts and everyone looks towards next season.

With a disappointing record at 1-8 the team looks to move forward and start fresh next year.

“I don’t like losing, but we have been getting better and we are correcting mistakes and our goal is to get better,” coach Humberto Garza said.

As the season ends so do the senior players playing days.

“I want to be remembered as a leader and a model and I want underclassmen to remember me for what I left on the field,” senior safety Andy Armendariz said.

Players also reminisce about past experiences they had on the field.

“My favorite and most memorable moment at Akins was beating Bastrop,” senior quarterback Jared Loyd said.

On another high note there were improvements from last years team.

“Our attitude and effort were huge improvements from last year, even with losses effort was great they never stopped,” Garza said.

Lake Travis

In a dismal showing versus Lake Travis, Akins could only muster up 98 total yards of offense to Travis’ 445.

The Cavaliers also scored 35 points in the 1st quarter leading to their 59-14 win.

“It is a bummer losing because we put a lot of effort and you would think it would reflect on the scoreboard,” junior lineman Donavan Martinez said.

Austin

On the football team’s homecoming game

Akins went into halftime on the losing end, 20-0.

But in the second half they came back firing on all cylinders. In the third quarter Loyd threw a 37-yard touchdown to junior receiver Joseph Featherstone to give Akins their first points of the game.

With time winding down a controversial unsportsmanlike conduct penalty was called after it appeared the Eagles scored.

“It was a questionable call the player said he did not say anything, but the ref said he heard something out of the player,” Garza said. “It was an unfortunate call, we can’t make those mistakes though.”

Bowie

In a game where the Eagles could not score a single point, they could not accumulate 100 total yards either. Bowie racked up 270 rushing yards to Akins’ 72, who lost four fumbles in a bad offensive performance.

The final game of the year was Friday versus the winless Anderson Trojans. Visit the Eagle’s Eye website online at www.akinseagleseye.com for updated information.
