Background of Joy Crookes

Only at 17 years of age, Crookes is writing songs and producing music while living up to her name, Joy. Coming from South London, Crookes is currently in and out of the studio working on her debut album with producers. She’s a pretty new artist so there’s not much to know about the underrated gem.

Musical Production of ‘New Manhattan’ & ‘Sinatra’

Crookes has a unique style. The combination of strings, trip-hop beats, and other instruments or music producing techniques is what makes Crookes a hypnotic, dreamy siren-like artist.

‘New Manhattan’ – this track begins with a harp with a dark undertone. The chorus is where things get a little intense. The production is low but you can hear that dark undertone that was heard in the beginning. Following the chorus, strings are introduced which gives the track a dramatic yet mesmerizing vibe. The rest of the track plays with a soft trip-hop beat until the very end when whip-like production is introduced and makes the track a lot more intense and dark.

‘Sinatra’ – this song is the follow up to ‘New Manhattan’ and is a very passion-filled track. ‘Sinatra’ starts with a synth-like sound while a piano is played softly in the background. Soon, a beat is heard as the song builds up to the chorus. As soon as the chorus begins, a heavy trip-hop beat is introduced while a soft guitar is played throughout some parts of the track. Following the chorus, the production has a muffled-like sound. The rest of the song of the song is repeated until the end when dreamy strings are introduced which gives the track an intense, beautiful end.

Lyric Analyzation

Crookes has a writing style that some would say is dramatic. Even though that may be true, you can’t deny the talent this artist has. On ‘New Manhattan’, the lyrics are very love-y but also mysterious in a few ways. Crookes even makes it seem creepy as if she’s a ghost. On ‘Sinatra’, the lyrics are different from ‘New Manhattan’ where as it doesn’t sound like a love song. Instead, the lyrics are supposed to be based off of loving someone you can’t have. Even though the meaning of lyrics has changed, she still manages to make it sound dark.

Dark lyrics? Check. Great voice? Check. Amazing music production? Check.
