Now, Now makes comeback with new single ‘SGL’

The ex-trio, now a duo, released their first single “SGL” after five years. Now, Now released “SGL” on May 11 as a taste of their upcoming full length album, which will come out later this year. In the meantime, fans can enjoy the new dreamy, pop-rock track to tide them over.

Band Background

The new record is the follow up to “Threads,” their second album, which was released in March of 2012. The band toured in 2013 with the band To Write Love On Her Arms. In 2014, the band announced that they were working on new material for a new record, but obviously, they may have scrapped it. The following year was a long, quiet hiatus from Now, Now. The trio were scheduled to perform at SXSW in 2016 and 2017 but withdrew. It has been reported that band member Jess Abbott has left the band. That leaves Cacie Dalager and Bradley Hale as a duo with no new music or concerts for five years, that is until now. They’re back and they’ve come with a strong pop-rock track to please fans and followers.

Musical Production

“SGL” has an acoustic sound while it maintains the signature sound that Now, Now is known for. Their music is described as dream pop-rock. It is very dreamy for sure. The beat is catchy and makes the track a little groovy. The sound of the track is the epitome of being a teenager. It really connects with the emotional side of music that teenagers are drawn to. Even though the track is showing hints of the emotional side of “teenage music” there is still a catchy beat that makes the track sound very calm and fun.

Lyrical Analysis

Now, Now’s lyrics in “SGL” seem to be more mature in a sense that Dalager sings them with a deep passion. Compared to their last two records, the lyrics seemed to have deepened more. In “Cars” (debut album, 2008), the lyrics are simple. Anyone can sing along. In “Neighbors” (EP, 2010), the lyrics are the same except you can tell there is a change in words that Dalager sings. In “Threads” (second album, 2012), the lyrics have evolved into a way more deeper message. They’re relatable to some people and they may have some listeners in trance with the words along with the dreamy music production. In “SGL”, the lyrics are similar to “Threads” (album) but you can definitely tell the difference because the lyrics in “SGL” are sung with a passion that “Threads” couldn’t achieve, although Dalager sung the lyrics very wonderful on their debut album, second album, EP, and now, the brand new single “SGL”.
