In January, the Akins FFA chapter celebrated a week of remarkable success following the Travis County Youth Show held from Jan. 15 to 17.
After a year of tireless preparation and dedication, several students earned top honors across a variety of categories including livestock, horticulture, and creative projects.
The chapter’s sheep, goat, and swine exhibitors saw significant success in the show ring. Notably, Makayla McDonald placed 2nd and 3rd in her goat classes and 6th in sheep. Laina James took home 2nd place in the Duroc swine class, while Salvador Archundia secured 3rd in the Hampshire class.
“Our students worked incredibly hard all year long for that moment,” the chapter announced. “We ask that if you see any of these students in your classes or in passing, please congratulate them on their hard work and dedication to their projects and this program.”
Some of these students began raising their livestock projects in May of last year. McDonald, Justin Muniz, Luna Mathias, and Laina James will be taking their projects to the San Antonio Livestock Show in mid-February. McDonald and Hoang will continue to exhibit at Rodeo Austin in March.
Students show their commitment to raising their projects and animals, working every day, even during freezing rain and blazing heat. Any student that takes an agriculture science class is eligible to participate in FFA and the show.
Beyond livestock, Akins students demonstrated their versatility in the Travis County Youth Fair, with seven students earning Blue Ribbons for their entries. Agricultural Science Teacher Brandon Callis highlighted the diversity of talent on display.
“Additionally, we had several students exhibiting their art, plants, photography, and more at the Youth Fair,” Callis said.
Supporters of the program were able to view the students’ work firsthand at the Country Store and Bake Sale where select projects were available for purchase.
