This year’s prom became the unifying event of the school year for the Class of 2022 after so many other events were canceled earlier this year because of concerns about COVID-19.

Seniors were anxious all year about whether or not they would have a prom because other events were canceled and because the campus had a slot start with planning and fundraising for the big dance event. Some said they didn’t believe it was going to happen until the days leading up to prom on May 7.

This year’s prom was expected to be one of the biggest proms in Akins history, with almost 500 ticket purchases. Tickets were no longer being sold at the door and had to have been purchased in the weeks prior to the event.

The event was held at the Hyatt Regency off of Barton Springs Road. The prom’s theme was “Masquerade,” but not many students wore the traditional ballroom masks. “DJ Joe,” who is also a security guard at Akins, provided the musical entertainment. There was a variety of music played, from throwbacks to Hispanic music. DJ Joe kept the seniors dancing all night and singing at the top of their lungs to Bruno Mars, Daddy Yankee, and Selena.

Seniors enjoyed brownies, cupcakes, Rice Krispie treats, chocolate mousse cups, and fruit. There was a photo booth that was run by students in the Akins Commercial Photography Program and seniors were able to take home one Polaroid print of their photo.

Prom was the Class of 2022’s last hurrah and one of the last moments, aside from graduation, that the class gathered together for an evening of fun. For many seniors, this was most definitely a night to remember and cherish for years to come.
