Silence fills the sideline, as the Eagles offense is a few feet from scoring. With a five-point deficit and only 45 seconds remaining, the ball is snapped, and senior halfback Teddy Lowery charges into the end zone. The Akins sideline erupts with excitement as the Eagles take the lead, starting the season with a win for the first time in years.

A new season has brought changes to Eagles Varsity football, leading to their recent successes. Discipline seems to be the cause for a new atmosphere surrounding the practice field and locker room.

“Players are more eager to win. They are dedicated to the game now,” junior defensive lineman JR Ramirez said. “Nobody slacks at practices.”

The Eagle’s dedication has shown on the field and on the scoreboards, by putting up two wins for the first time since the 2004 season. Currently, the Eagles are 2-5 overall, with a district record of 1-2.

The second win of the season and first district win in four years came against Del Valle, which was also won in a late game situation thanks to a 13-yard receiving touchdown by senior wide receiver Marshal Trevino.

“Everybody is really focused and tuned in to get their job done,” senior Teddy Lowery said. “Everyone is motivated and hungry to do good and change the program.”

The Eagles realize there is still a lot of work ahead in the schedule, with teams like Austin, Bowie, and Anderson, the team looks to put in more time to focus on some of the playoff football programs.

”These are regular playoff teams. We need to put in extra work at practice,” junior running back Jason Hart said.

The team is focusing on making the playoffs by putting in extra effort on the practice field and studying more film.

“Our goal is to make it to the playoffs, and we have a great opportunity,” Head Coach Humberto Garza said.

The Eagles only need two more district wins to secure a playoff spot, something that hasn’t been done before in Akins history.

“It feels amazing being two games away from making the playoffs,” Trevino said “The team has finally come together and is working as a unit.”
